Urban transportation: technology matters

Infrastructure, Design, Manufacturing and Safety

In urban mass transit, many elements function together for safe and effective operations. The Nucleocc Group, specialists in heavy and light rail and streetcar transportation, provides “comprehensive solutions,” says Armando Guerra, head of the Nucleocc Group’s infrastructure division. “Our solutions cover signaling, electrification, and information management.”

Indra has been adapting solutions initially developed for high-speed control centers, such as the Da Vinci platform for rail traffic management, to the metropolitan environment. This platform involves integrating all remote control systems, operational planning, a real-time traffic tracking system, traffic predictions, automatic train routing, geographic information system, and other features.

There are also companies in the transportation sector that specialize in more specific areas, such as the design and creation of management and control centers. One such company is Aplein Ingenieros, based in Madrid, which provides solutions for operations and video surveillance. “We provide not only the visible part, the video walls, but also solutions for ergonomics and interior design,” explains Antonio Sánchez, division manager for Aplein Ingenieros control centers, “because in a control room, lighting, heating and air-conditioning, and visibility must planned carefully.”

The company CAF, with factories in Spain and the United States, is a leader in the design and manufacturing of trains for metropolitan transportation. CAF has manufactured units for cities around the world, including Madrid, Rome, Mexico City, Washington, New Delhi, Hong Kong and Santiago de Chile, as well as streetcars for cities including Edinburgh, Lisbon, and Seville.

Safety is another area in which the leading transportation companies are providing solutions. GMV developed an integrated alert system, which uses GPS and can alert the driver of the possibility of imminent collision.
