Yondelis was approved for sale in Europe by the European Commission for both ovarian cancer and soft tissue sarcoma. For soft tissue sarcoma, the drug has also been authorized in 21 countries outside of Europe, including Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Hong Kong, India, Russia, Singapore, South Korea, and Vietnam. The compound has also been given the green light to be sold in Kazakhstan and the Philippines to treat ovarian cancer.
The company expects strong growth in sales throughout this year and next, as the drug is in the midst of its official launch. The strength of Yondelis has been demonstrated by the growth of exports, which already account for 92% of PharmaMar’s revenues.
Creating a global network
PharmaMar has partnered with Centocor Ortho Biotech Products, the biotech subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson, which will represent Yondelis in most countries. The exception is Japan, where PharmaMar has a sales agreement with Taiho Pharmaceutical.
Since its inception, PharmaMar has reached a series of agreements to expand its presence in a variety of markets and made alliances with 200 institutions, universities, research sites and hospitals worldwide. In addition, the firm maintains a large sales force of 51 representatives who sell Yondelis within Europe, with offices also located in the United States.
Up to 300 pharmaceutical experts work at PharmaMar’s headquarters in Madrid. All are part of a global network involving the use of marine biology to fight cancer at a number of research sites and universities around the world.
