Traffic management, controlled by technology

What matters is R&D+i

The development of solutions that facilitate traffic management has been made possible thanks to the evolution of the technology and to the commitment to R&D+i by product manufacturers and systems integrators in the sector.

Investment in research and development is the key to the position of all these companies. “We operate in a highly competitive environment and we have to invest constantly in order maintain our presence in the market” says the sales manager of the toll area at Tecsidel.

With regard to the sector for variable message panels in which the technology is constantly evolving, the technical manager for traffic sales at Imago Group-Odeco Electrónica says, “R&D+i allows us to offer the appropriate product adapted to the specifications required by the Administration”.

According to the general manager of energy traffic systems of Cegasa, R&D+i is vital, “since it represents the starting point for any idea or project that will subsequently gain momentum before becoming the ideal product”.

The importance of research and development in a company like Aimsun is illustrated by the fact that R&D represents approximately 25% of the firm’s total activity. “Although we also depend on a network of international universities that we collaborate with for specific research projects”, adds Alexandre Torday.

According to the consultancy manager of Aimsun, to a certain extent investment in R&D+i enables the company “to think about the applications required in the future and to prepare them in advance”..

Future trends

Looking to the future, the professionals that work in Spanish companies developing solutions and products related to traffic management are highly optimistic. They have their sights firmly set on the technology systems that will soon allow communication and cooperation between every element on the highway – vehicles, drivers, traffic lights, signs, etc.

The principle is based on operating systems for vehicles with intelligent cooperation: V2V communications (Vehicle to Vehicle), V2I (Vehicle to Infrastructure), traffic management, data about the car fleet, etc.

This will enable highway authorities to improve their management and control of the highway network, increase the capacity of networks, maximize the efficiency of public transport systems or to improve the safety of all drivers.

Finally, with regard to motorists, thanks to these systems, “vehicles will be able to communicate with each other or with their environment in order to give users a better understanding of the state of the highways or to issue signs in the event of an accident”, predicts Geral Jean Pelle.
